Mainstream cinema based on a plot that revolves around sport isn’t very common both in Hollywood and Bollywood. Power-packed movies that highlight the perseverance of athletes and the ‘never say die’ human spirit come along once in a while and most often than not are really loved and appreciated by the audiences. It comes as no wonder then the cinema loving people of India are really looking forward to the release of the Milkha Singh biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Through the ages Hollywood has always cashed in on the fervor for sports through movies like Chariots Of Fire, Rocky, Jerry Maguire and Moneyball. However, the same trend hasn’t been witnessed in Bollywood which only has a small collection of well-made and successful movies revolving around a particular sport. The most memorable among these happen to be Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Lagaan and Chak De India which were made special by the performances of their lead actors who have now become timeless icons of Hindi cinema.
Chak De India, starring Shahrukh Khan was in-fact the last big budget Bollywood movie based on a sport, that being the Indian national sport of Hockey. Now, almost six years later Viacom 18 and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra are preparing to showcase Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a movie that belongs to very rare genre in Bollywood cinema; Sports Biographical Movies. The film which stars the multi-talented Farhan Akhtar is named after the last words that the real-life Milkha Singh’s father spoke while trying to save his son’s life during the riots following the Partition of India.
Since the release of the movie teaser in November 2012, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has successfully grabbed the attention of the entire nation. Just looking at Farhan Akhtar in the trailer is enough to indicate the tremendous amount of effort he has put into the project. As the world awaits the release of the movie in July, 2013 the makers have started their promotion efforts to increase the hype around the film. Earlier this week the first music track from the movie was released and made available for purchase and streaming on iTunes, Flyte and Dhingana.
Titled “Zinda“, the song has been penned by Prasoon Joshi and composed by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. It has so far won positive ratings from music fans and will definitely appeal to all the Rock music enthusiasts in the country. As the song starts playing out more frequently on TV channels and radio stations it has the potential to become the next youth anthem to rock the country, similar to the title track from ‘Chak De India‘ six years ago.
