The female creation is wondrous and undoubtedly appears to be heavenly in its natural state. In this feature we take a look at the concept of nudity in art, cinema and assess some rare instances of Bollywood Actresses Nude.

Female beauty is one of the most powerful primary forces in the human universe. For it a thousand ships set sail, civilizations were conquered, novels were written, symphonies composed. Much of museum art and industrial design and even the curves of the family sedan in your garage were patterned to capture the tantalizing spark of the female form. In fact, take a moment to step back and observe the world around you and the result will be an obvious but highly thought provoking fact. Everything that surrounds you is naked except your fellow human beings.

Clothing and modern day fashion as we know it is an integral part of our lives today. For most of its existence however the Homosapien race was mostly in the nude. Consider the facts that prove this; the earth is known to be about 4.5 billion years old and the modern day humans have been on this planet only for the past 200,000 years. Textile based clothing even by the most flexible estimates is less than 40,000 years old going by the findings of anthropologists who have dated the oldest possible sewing needles to that period. What this means is that our species has been in the nude or semi-nude state for close to 80 percent of its existence. It therefore comes as no surprise that most of the highly renowned and well known works of art and sculpture depict individuals in a state of nude and the female form is an integral part of most of these works.

When creative professionals think about purity and nativeness they think about the unclothed human body. The nude is a work of fine art that has as its primary subject the unclothed human body, forming a subject genre of art, in the same way as landscapes and still life. In Babylonian, Ancient Egyptian and Greek art, gods, goddesses, athletes, dancers and warriors were depicted in the nude form to express human energy and life as well as basic and complex human emotions. The fascination with the nude human form was also not only limited to the west. Significant non-Western traditions of depicting nudes come from India, and Japan. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves located in Maharashtra, India are shockingly explicit even in the eyes of liberal westerners. These caves are however considered to be an amazing blend of spirituality, sexuality, feminism and eroticism.

In the 21st century, nudity has become a complex topic to speak about. Its acceptability varies from region to region so while it is highly liberal in most of Europe and certain parts of South America, its age-restricted in North America. In the middle-east its officially banned while in the Eastern part of the world it can be risky to undertake a creative project that extensively deals with nudity and the nude form of the female. A simple measure of how accepting a society is of nudity can be judged by evaluating the acceptance of the same in visual art, particularly cinema. In Hollywood, movies are rarely censored for objectionable content unless the movie makers request for a broader certification. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has many levels of certification ranging from General (open to all) to NC-17 (only suitable for audiences 17 and older). Some of the most successful Hollywood movies of all time have became known as a result of some of the nude scenes in them which many a times were essential to the story, e.g: Kate Winslet in Titanic, Angelina Jolie in Gia and Original Sin.

In Bollywood however the topic of sex, nudity, on-screen kissing etc has been taboo since its inception. Its sounds highly ironic that the land of the Kamasutra, Ajanta and Ellora is so restrictive in its outlook to something that is so natural and beautiful. There have however been bold actresses in Bollywood who chose to unleash their sensuality on screen. Surprisingly, some of the most sensuous depictions of Bollywood actresses nude happened in the period of the 70s and 80s under the beautiful direction of the legendary Raj Kapoor.
