The Avengers, Batman, Spiderman And More – Here Comes The Superhero Summer of 2012
For the superhero fan and comic book lover, 2011 was an excellent year given the number of superhero based movies that released in Hollywood. Green Lantern, Captain America and Thor, made their big screen debut even though better known characters such as The Flash and Wonder Woman waited in the wings for their respective moment of glory. While Captain America was an absolute treat to watch, Thor was decent while Green Lantern was disappointing.
In 2012, however the action gets bigger, better and more mainstream with a return to what we can term as the “celebrities of the comic book world“. Batman and Spiderman will both be back in two mega releases with the former ending its series with a final sequel and the latter starting again with a reboot of the franchise. This summer will also see Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk come together under the same roof with the first ever superhero ensemble on the big screen. The best part about these movies is that they are all made in original 3D and given the stature of the characters and the people behind these productions, the experience should be nothing short of mind-blowing.
Lets take a closer look at what Hollywood has lined up for us this year:
The Avengers is a collection of some of Marvel’s best superheros bringing together Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk amongst others. It is in a way the equivalent of DC Comic’s Justice League which is led by Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman and Martian Man and is a much loved animated series. The making of Avengers in itself is an unprecedented event in movie history as it ties in the plots of two other movies. If you look at the post-credits scenes of Thor and Captain American you realize that the same characters played by the same actors come back on screen in the Avengers. Such brilliant co-ordination is only possible if there is highly detailed planning in place for a movie and all the moves are controlled by a single studio.
The movie is also one of the most expensive movies to come out of Hollywood at a budget of $220 million. Massive promotion efforts for the film are underway at present with a 25 April release planned in many parts of Europe and a 4 May release in the US, India and the rest of the world.
The Dark Knight Rises
The final installment to producer and director Christopher Nolan’s Batman film series will see Christian Bale reprise his role as Batman for the last time. Following the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman assumes responsibility for Dent’s crimes in order to protect Dent’s reputation and is subsequently hunted by the Gotham City Police Department. Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Batman returns to Gotham where he must discover the truth regarding the mysterious Selina Kyle, while stopping the villain Bane’s plans to destroy the city.
This film introduces Anne Hathaway who plays Selina Kyle, otherwise better known as Catwoman. Shot at an even bigger budget of $250 million, the movie was shot in India, London, Glasgow, Los Angeles, New York, Newark, and Pittsburgh. Considering that this Batman series has just got better with every sequel, the Dark Knight Rises truly promises to be one hell of a ride. Its scheduled to hit theaters in late July this year.
The Amazing Spider Man
Not that we need to be reminded about how Peter Parker came to become SpiderMan through another movie, but in the world of comics when you run out of ideas for a superhero you go ahead and give it a reboot. That’s what Spiderman fans can expect in July this year with director Marc Webb’s version of the slinging superhero which will be played by Andrew Garfield, who is best known for playing Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard mate Eduardo Saverin in the Social Network.
While it will have the same basic premise, the new version of the Spiderman series will be much more spectacular than before as it can be enjoyed in 3D and will feature the latest developments in visual effects. The Amazing Spiderman also hits movie screens across the world in early July this year.
Apart from the above which are this year’s biggest releases, one will also see the return of Will Smith to the Men In Black series as well as a modern day adaptation to the classic fairytale of Snow white with Julia Roberts playing the role of the evil queen in a movie titled “Mirror Mirror“.
All in all a fantastic summer awaits the movie buff this year.
