Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez – Real Superstars or Media Conspiracies
Imagine this, Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) and Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) together as of this moment have 12,727,221 followers on Twitter. That’s more than the number of followers for Jennifer Lopez, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan combined. Bieber’s single Baby, was among the worldwide top 10 singles in 2010 and has more than 493 million views on YouTube, making it the most viewed video on the network (see here).
Mind boggling stats when you think that even India with a population of more than 1 billion where the only forms of entertainment are movies and cricket can’t imagine such a following for any of its stars in the virtual world. If you’re wondering who is Justin Bieber and why is he so famous then there are two possible answers to the question. The known version states that Bieber was discovered as a talent by Scooter Braun when he accidently viewed him singing in one of his YouTube videos. Impressed by his singing, Mr.Braun tracked him down and signed him up to Raymond Braun Media Group, a joint venture between Braun and Usher. The rest as they say is history.
In just two years Bieber has become a raging teenage heartthrob and recently his movie “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” surpassed Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” to become the most successful concert-themed movie ever. The alternate version which is termed as a conspiracy theory (and makes more sense) goes by the track that the American Music Industry desperately needed a pop sensation that would appeal to the digitally savvy young audiences. So they created Justin Bieber, a perfectly charming and good looking kid who would massively appeal to millions of teenage girls around the world which would in turn allow the studios to mint money (read The Justin Bieber Digital Controversy)
Selena Gomez on the other hand seems to be more original and has risen to her current level of stardom through the tried and tested route of being a child actor on Disney Television, with her hit show Wizards of Waverly Place.
Bieber (17) and Gomez(18) are currently dating one another and that’s what makes this couple a super-force in the online world given their massive following on all social networking platforms.
For instance, the song above has close to 32 million views on YouTube. A number that is 8 times bigger than the most viewed Bollywood video on the network
